run away to bali and sell bananas
Written 10/8/07. 393 words.

Bandslash - Pete & Ryan, basically gen. This is pretty much a finished ficlet, but I never posted it because it was just a silly little thing I didn't feel was that original, and I kind of felt like I'd already written it better in a slice of moon.

Some days, when the crowd is just too big and the fame gets to him, Pete thinks about ditching everything and starting over in some remote little country no one’s ever heard of, changing his name. It’s exactly the sort of romanticized fantasy that appeals to him, and some nights on the bus when it’s all just too much, that’s what he thinks about.

And some nights, he calls Ryan.

“Hello?” Ryan grumbles, voice husky with interrupted sleep. “It’s fucking four AM, Pete, what do you want?”

“Let’s run away, Ryan Ross,” Pete whispers into the phone.

“Okay,” Ryan says, not quite whispering back but understanding, a little, ready to play along. “Where will we go?”

“I was thinking about Bali,” Pete tells him. “We can use ridiculous aliases and sell bananas all day long and no one will ever know.”

“Yeah?” Ryan asks. “And what if we get bored?”

“We won’t.”

“Never?”

“Never.”

“Okay.” Ryan yawns into the phone. “Let’s leave tomorrow, then.”

There is a long pause, and then, “Ryan?”

“Yeah?”

“We’re not leaving tomorrow.”

Ryan laughs a little. “I know,” he says, affectionate but [word: eye-rolly, the ‘you idiot’ is implied, etc...], still.

“Back-up plan, though,” Pete says, still whispering, “in case everything crashes and burns. We’ll be okay, you and me, yeah? We can always go to Bali and sell bananas.”

“We’ll be fine,” Ryan says seriously, quietly. “We won’t need a back-up plan.”

“Just in case, though.”

“Yeah, sure, just in case.”

“Okay,” Pete says. “You should go back to sleep. You sound tired.”

“Because someone woke me up to ask me about running away to Bali.”

“Dude, it was important.”

“Sure,” Ryan says, “yeah, I get that, but that’s why I sound tired, because I am.”

“Go back to sleep,” Pete says again. “I’ll call you later.” He hangs up and stares at the top of his bunk for a while.

It’s not like he thinks they really need a back-up plan, like in case they don’t make it; clearly, they’ve both more than made it. It’s just that occasionally he wonders how much longer this will last. Which is, frankly, terrifying. He knows he and Ryan will never really run away, but it’s nice to think about, all the same.

He doesn’t fall asleep for a few hours, still, but when he does, he rests easy.
