we_are_cities' feb 17 prompt, which just seemed inherently sad to me.
It was one of those gorgeous sunsets that looks like someone painted it and stuck it in the sky. You almost don’t want to break the moment by talking. They just stood and watched the clouds for a while in silence.
Finally, Ryan turned to Spencer and said, “So. This is it.”
“Yeah,” Spencer said. He was still looking at the sky.
Ryan sighed. They were quiet for a while before he said, “What are you going to do now?”
“I don’t know.”
“I might go back to school.”
“Yeah?”
“If I feel like it.” Ryan shrugged.
“I’m going to miss this,” Spencer said suddenly, tearing his eyes away from the horizon to look at his best friend at last.
“Me too, a little.” Ryan was unable to keep the wistfulness out of his voice. “But not enough.”
“Yeah,” said Spencer again, turning away, and Ryan wondered if there was something wrong beyond the breakup. He didn’t ask. For the first time since they’d met so many years ago, he couldn’t read Spencer at all.
