Why Am I the Witness?
Rent, Mark/Collins, post-show. Written 9/14/05. 177 words. An argument about sex.

They never used to argue, but they argue almost every night, now. It’s the same tired fight, and Mark is sick of it.

“Look, I have no one left to live for, anyway! I made my film and you’re all going to die before me. What does it matter if I go out in a blaze the same way?”

“Stop with your romantic notions, Mark. Do you know what it’s really like, knowing your days are numbered? Do you know how to deal with losing a lover so violently, having him torn away from you?”

This is the point in the argument where it always comes back to Angel, and Mark can’t take it anymore.

“I miss him too!” he explodes. “And before long, I’m going to miss you, Roger and Mimi! Do you know what that’s like? To know you’ll survive your closest friends, your family, for god’s sake?”

“I gave up on god a long time ago.” Collins is quiet, now, and Mark feels guilty.

“I’m sorry,” he whispers, pressing a kiss to Collins’ temple.
